  • 'This is a nicely comprehensive book of chords for the octave mandolin. The fretting and fingerings are clearly indicated. There is even an extra bonus of the chord constituents' (root, 3rd, 5th, 7th, etc.) being indicated below the fretboards. This is particularly handy if you need to make a quick adjustment to a chord for whatever reason. The primary drawback of the book is the selection of "slash" chords as are only major chords and on the fretboards the G string is tuned to C for some reason. Except for this section (pp. 84-87), the book will come in handy for anyone wanting to play complex chords or just freshly voiced chords on the octave mandolin.'

    (Scott USA)
(Publisher's note: as Scott points out there was an error in the slash chord section, which hassubsequently been corrected in the latest edition).

'This book in the series is for the Octave Mandolin (aka Octave Mandola in Europe) in GDAE tuning. It is suitable for players of any level, beginner to advanced. One might ask why not just use a mandolin chord book as the tuning is the same albeit an octave higher? Answer: because the octave instrument has a longer neck some chord voicings which would be achievable on the smaller instrument would be very difficult if not impossible on the larger one. Some will question the need of such a book when there are various examples of chords available on the internet. Well by the time you have searched, assessed, downloaded and printed what you want on numerous occasions, you've wasted a lot of time and effort, ink, paper and electricity. This book is your foundation. It will be there whenever you need it and can be added to through your own discoveries.'
